Entrevista a Mr. Katsumi Komagata

K: …»FIRST LOOK” (Primera mirada).

Interview with Mr. Katsumi Komagata by DoubleBrain

DB: Hello Mr. Komagata. First of all we would like to thank you for taking time to answer these questions. We are very honored to start the year with a post in our blog with your interview.

Could you please tell us something about your cultural background and the job you did before you started to create books?
K: I am a graphic designer and have worked for promotion, package, and other aspects in a field of communication design.

DB: You explained* that your daughter inspired you to create books, is that how you got started working with folding techniques and pop-up books?
K: Though I had already experienced in doing with fold, die-cut, and other technics, I found those effect were really useful while I was creating the books to my daughter.

DB: Aside from your daughter, what inspires you most? How is your creative process?
K: Curiosity is the source of creation, sharing means fairness.

DB: Do you have some routines during your working process?
K: Thumbnail sketches are beginning of work. These skeches are really small and not to put any details yet, just try to come up the idea with imagination, then study to achieve the visual and texts, then making prototype. This process will be repeated over and over as long as necessary.

DB: Do you have a target group in mind when you develop a new project? And do you already consider the production costs by any means or do you usually work completely free of limitations?
K: To face the person who need the book. This means like to plow the field, then the seed will come out and make it grow. Reach the prototype without any cost considered, then meet the printers and find the paper to use, then to figure out the price of book.

DB: Where do you like to work? How is your studio?
K: Kept working at the private space at home that is comfortable for my works.

DB: During the conference you gave in Elisava School of Design, in Barcelona (6th of February, 2018) we could see your book “Plis et Plans”, a project for blind readers. How was the experience to create this book? Did you get an interesting feedback?
K: Knowing their situation of handicapped children, there is always the fence in between us and they are isolated. We could share the time and experience with them if we could generate the projects to share.

DB: Which one of all your books is especially important to you, and why?
K: …»FIRST LOOK». I have started out with this title.

DB: Is there any subject you would love to make a book about but haven’t done it yet for commercial or any other reasons?
K: Though I worked for deaf children and have achived the book for sign language, but it has unpublished yet. I wish to work for more projects for color blind and those handicapped children.

DB: Which part of your work do you enjoy the most?
K: The process of creation.

DB: If you had to describe your work in one single word, what would that be?
K: To share, not to be competitive.

DB: Are there other book artists whose work you admire? Could you name a few we might not have heard of?
K: …Bruno Munari, Leo Lionni, Paul Land, Iela Mari, and many.

DB: Mr. Komagata, we are so grateful for your generosity! Hopefully, we will see you at the next Children’s Book Fair in Bologna.
